the focus
This 4 week course will provide a thorough introduction to Daoist seated meditation (jingzuo or “sitting in stillness” 静坐) as we learned in Wudang. The focus is on foundational skills and practical application, providing a deep and structured approach to the basics.
Possibly the most fundamental part of Daoist meditation involves purifying the heart-mind (心 xīn). In traditional Chinese contexts, the thoughts and emotions reside in the heart and in meditation we clean the heart by allowing space and time for the chaos to settle. Much like a cloudy glass of water, if you provide stillness, the water eventually becomes clear. This is what we will focus on in this 4 week course, basic meditation with practical application.
We will also include some teaching of the “hibernating dragon method” (zhelongfa 蛰龙法), a side lying meditation practice.
meditation in the San Feng Lineage
Every aspect of our training was suffused with meditation during our years in China. Even the most intense kung fu classes would often resolve into a form of walking or standing meditation. And every evening was an hour of seated meditation, beginning with the very simple, restful sitting in stillness we will be covering in this course.
Master Guo sitting in stillness (jingzuo 静坐)
As master Guo used to say, “it doesn’t matter what you are doing now - when you are finished with it, you must let your heart-mind rest, even if it is just 3 or 5 minutes. If you sit in stillness for 15 minutes, you can cast everything away! In this way you can slowly work to restore your original pure and clean heart. This is something that cannot be bought with gold.”
